That’s not all: He was President of the Royal Society, great friends of Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren, a lover of wine and, of course, a Londoner. He was an Administrator of the Navy and an MP, a womaniser, dilettante, and sufferer of painful bladder stones. Samuel Pepys (pronounced: Peeps) was a lot of things. Strap in to find out what Pepys had to say, and where you can follow his trail in London today. If you’re here, there’s a high chance you’re a London history lover. The man has made a massive impact on the way we understand the event. The Great Fire of London gets great treatment in his diaries and his work is one of the best sources on the subject. Pepys’ London, it turns out, was also especially flammable. Being born in 1633, Pepys was an adult through the later parts of the Civil War – even attending Charles I’s execution – Cromwell’s republic and its collapse. A London of Tudor structures stacked lop-sidedly together where animal fights were popular entertainment and you’d be lucky to make it to adulthood. Pepys’ London was one of filth and disease that we imagine when we think back to life in the 1600s. And few people have done so at such an interesting juncture in history. The history of London’s most catastrophic event, the man who recorded it and where you can pick up his trail.įew people have passed down such a complete picture of their time as Samuel Pepys. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail-just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor-including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother-and how she retook control of her life. Finally, it shows how everyday Americans from all walks of life confronted themselves, each other, and the burden of the past-and how their fears and courage helped shape our future. It also paints a rich and moving portrait of a people, a time, and a nation in the face of powerful change. Scott Esposito: The Book of Disquiet is enormous - in every sense of the word - and I’m eager to get into some of the granular details with you, but I thought we might start off this conversation with a more general question: In what sense is The Book of Disquiet a book? Is it a book? Just what is it?įamously, The Book of Disquiet is an incomplete work, composed of 500-some fragments that were not even published until 1982, decades after Pessoa’s death in 1935. Recently released by New Directions with a brand new translation, The Book of Disquiet is in its most complete form ever. Pessoa ruminates about pretty much everything, often entering enlightening and sorrowful spaces while battling life’s eternal questions. The book has been deemed an “autobiography” and a “diary,” but it’s equally a novel or an essay collection or even a kind of pre-internet codex blog. He left behind a chest full of writing that would be later known to many as The Book of Disquiet. The Modernist master Fernando Pessoa’s work remained largely unnoticed during his lifetime. In this edition, Scott Esposito and Bradley Babendir discuss Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet. “Double Take” is our literary criticism series wherein two readers tackle a highly-anticipated book’s innermost themes, successes, failures, trappings, and surprises. In 1950 he joined the faculty at Yale University as chairman of the department of design. In 1933 he came to the United States, where he taught at Black Mountain College for sixteen years. Josef Albers, one of the most influential artist-educators of the twentieth century, was a member of the Bauhaus group in Germany during the 1920s. A celebration of the longevity and unique authority of Albers’s contribution, this landmark edition will find new audiences in studios and classrooms around the world. With over a quarter of a million copies sold in its various editions since 1963, Interaction of Color remains an essential resource on color, as pioneering today as when Albers first created it.įifty years after Interaction’s initial publication, this new edition presents a significantly expanded selection of close to sixty color studies alongside Albers’s original text, demonstrating such principles as color relativity, intensity, and temperature vibrating and vanishing boundaries and the illusion of transparency and reversed grounds. Originally published by Yale University Press in 1963 as a limited silkscreen edition with 150 color plates, Interaction of Color first appeared in paperback in 1971, featuring ten color studies chosen by Albers, and has remained in print ever since. These stories offer his unique perspective: we are at the Prime Minister's side on 9/11 when he is asked to give authorization to shoot down a passenger airliner that has not responded to identification requests. As always, he reserves his greatest admiration for his wife of more than sixty years, Aline, his "Rock of Gibraltar." Bush, Boris Yeltsin, Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac, Pierre Trudeau, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Of course, many familiar names figure in these stories, including George W. Readers will learn why his commonsense judgment continues to influence our lives to this day, in ways both profound and subtle: from forging long-lasting relationships with foreign countries to making it easy to identify our national airline when we travel. In this collection of short essays, he has picked up his pen to reminisce about his long years in the public eye, and the many luminaries he met and worked with. October 2018 marks twenty-five years since Jean Chrétien took the helm as prime minister. Includes two sixteen-page colour photo inserts. Recounted with warmth, insight and humour, these brief and candid essays feature many behind-the-scenes stories from a long, distinguished and colourful career. One of the most popular Canadian prime ministers in recent history, Jean Chrétien has some stories to tell. It is its own character and it makes this story something else. You feel for the other characters, and by the end of this book you will be rooting for all of them. This story reads as if its actually happening, and will have you feeling every little bit. The feelings that ooze out of this book feel wholly authentic, and nothing seems rushed or unreal. Their personalities shine through in this book, and I loved being able to laugh with them at every crazy thing they were saying and doing.Īll of these characters come together to make a truly great story. (That happened more than I thought it would.) When reading this book I also couldn't help but laugh out loud about every other page because of the quick whit these characters have. Boaz and Maggie had me cracking up at just about everything they said, except for the times in which they were saying some pretty important and meaningful stuff. (And you have to adore her pink hair.) Roman is charming yet very raw. Junie is spectacularly real and unapologetic. I'll be honest though, all of the characters in this book are gems. After reading the synopsis, I was intrigued to read this book and see if it was as good as it seemed. I came across this book on a blog about books in the new "New Adult" book genre/category. I really enjoyed reading The Sound of Us. |
